Meera
Our first destination was two hours away from the city of Jaipur. We were headed to Chand Baori, one of the largest stepwells in the world.
âIt is the largest and the deepest stepwell of India. Meera, it is thirteen floors deep. And holy shit, it was constructed in the eighth and ninth century. Thatâs more than a thousand years ago!â
Luke had been like that for the past hour. His voice rising in pitch the more he read from his travel guide book. His book had pages that opened into larger pages. He had spread it over both our laps, tracing his finger over the lines he read.
The hotel had their own taxi service, and that was how we met our driver of the week in Jaipur, Jagdish. At Lukeâs excited muttering, he looked at me from his mirror, and asked me in Hindi, âSister, where has sir come from?â
Luke turned to me, his eyebrows raised in question. I smiled and shook my head at him. I looked at the back of Jagdishâs head, and said, âAmerica.â
âAmerica? And you, sister? Where are you from?â
âA small village in Gujarat.â
âI can speak some Gujarati. Kem chho? Saru chhe?â he asked. How are you? All good? His eyes shone in delight, a soft teasing smile on his face.
I chuckled.
Luke was silent as he watched our exchange. A small smile tugged at his lips as he looked at me. âWhat?â I asked.
He chuckled, shook his head, and gently grazed the back of his fingers along my cheek. My heart fluttered within my chest, and a rush of warmth surged to my cheeks as I glanced at the driver's seat.
âLuke, what are you doing? Someone will see.â
At that, he smiled. âDo you know anyone here?â
I shook my head.
âDoes anyone know you?â
âNo.â
âThen does it matter to you what anyone says or sees or thinks?â
Crazy, sweet man.
I shook my head and grazed my fingers on the back of his hand. Heat bloomed in his eyes, turning darker. He turned his hand, allowing our fingers to intertwine, creating a sense of comfort and warmth. Luke had a way of grounding me, of pulling me away from the dark and melancholic corners of my mind and filling my heart with light, joy, and a riot of fluttering sensations in my stomach.
I was so lost in his touch, in the scenery and the villages passing, I was taken by surprise when Jagdish stopped and announced that weâd reached our destination.
I looked outside the window and couldn't see anything monumental. It was just houses and shops and tiny buildings like my own village. Jagdish asked us to get out of the car so he could go park it somewhere cool.
It was a beautiful, cloudy morning. It wasnât so cloudy that Iâd worry about rain, but the sun hid in the clouds and wasnât hitting my head.
I got out first, clutching my purse on my shoulder. I wore my green kameez, with pink salwar and dupatta. Little mirrors were embedded in my dupatta, and pink flowers were embroidered in my kameez.
